When I spied Cassandra Smith’s painted antlers late one night on Etsy, they reminded me all the possibilities that come with paint. In the same way color energizes a room or a tired piece of furniture, it can give new spirit to natural objects such as branches, pinecones and rocks. Don’t get me wrong, I love the true colors of nature, but at holiday time especially, when the outdoor landscape is bleak, I just feel like taking some color chances and I’d think you might too. Transforming natural objects with unexpected or bold colors feels particularly festive and joyous this time of year and it’s a great way to experiment with color combinations you could translate to a full room setting. I’m experiencing my all-time most clumsy, most absent minded, and most ill-prepared Christmas season ever. In my desperation to get on to the next, I’ve set out three cans of metallic paint in the laundry room; one silver, one gold, and one bronze. Weary from the hunt for tree stands and ice buckets I may never find, I’m now cheerfully whistling along with Bing Crosby, painting my holiday troubles away one glitzy and shimmery metallic holiday project at a time. By now, we’re all feeling a little blasé about Mrs. Blandings’ account of how to choose the perfect white. At least I was, anyway, until I spent an afternoon at the Kohler showroom helping a client to realize the dream bathroom she describes as: “An exceptionally modulated and multi-layered, mixed, almost nearly, but not exactly an entirely white, all-white bathroom.” There are right around 151 whites to choose from in the Benjamin Moore color system.
